The Indian Premier League (IPL) helps cricketers "leave their worries behind" and play stress-free cricket, according to Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan.Dilshan, who is currently in India playing in the fifth edition of the IPL, said the revenue earned from the IPL has helped players focus on cricket and not stress over their finances.
"Ever since the IPL started, the financial factor for cricketers has really worked.
They have been able to leave their worries behind. They can build a good house and get a good car. Asian cricketers have made some good money. It is a great experience for young sportsmen," Dilshan told the Deccan Chronicle.
The 35-year-old said that when he's away at the IPL he has the opportunity to spend much-needed time with his family
"I've been on many international tours and don’t get much free time to be with family. When I get a three day break, I spend time with them. I take my family with me to every city during the IPL, as they serve as a real stressbuster. I spend time with them, go shopping and eat out," Dilshan said.
Sri Lankan cricketers make far less in comparison to their counterparts in many of the other Test playing nations. And thanks to their cash-stricken cricket board, the players were also unpaid through much of last year and faced many hardships.
Dilshan earns $650,000 a year for playing less than seven weeks of T20 cricket at the IPL, while he reportedly earns a little over $100,000 a year from his annual contract, in addition to match fees, from the Sri Lankan board.
